NOTES ON BLINDNESS: INTO DARKNESS is an immersive virtual reality (VR) project based on John Hull’s sensory and psychological experience of blindness released alongside the feature film.
John Hull’s original audio recordings form also the basis of this project, a six-part interactive documentary using new forms of storytelling, gameplay mechanics and virtual reality to explore his cognitive and emotional experience of blindness.
“(…) the experience of putting on a headset and virtually falling once again into a “world beyond sight” nearly brought me to tears” (filmmakermagazine.com)
“NOTES ON BLINDNESS: INTO DARKNESS is undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary digital experiences of these past years, something that interactive storytelling has tried to accomplish without ever succeeding: an immersive journey so powerful the audience can literally let go.” (imm3rsive.com)
“(…) NOTES ON BLINDNESS does a great job of showing how concentration and reliance on other senses (specifically hearing in this case) can create a compelling landscape.” (uploadvr.com)
“(…) how interactive forms of storytelling might further explore Dr. Hull’s vast and detailed account — in particular how new mediums like virtual reality could illuminate his investigations into auditory experience.” (nytimes.com)
“It’s one of the only VR pieces so mesmerizing I was able to forget about the inherent discomfort of having an heavy headset strapped to my face.” (motherboard.vice.com)
