GDC, MIPTV, SXSW… canceled: how to organise your XR conference online?

Yesterday we learned about the cancellation of SXSW (link), one of the most important meetings of the year for the XR and tech community. If this decision is completely understandable, it allows the immersive industry to imagine more … virtual meeting XR conferences! Solutions that already exist, and may allow to relaunch a restricted activity in the real world.

GDC, SXSW... canceled: how to organise your XR conference online?

(From VRrOOm) In the wake of the unprecedented health crisis that we are experiencing now and which will have inevitable economic repercussions in the sector of artistic events and cultural activities, time is ripe to consider the migration of the festivals or exhibition programs to virtual reality.

The VRrOOm Social XR Events platform was created to host events and live performances, screenings of traditional films or in 360 VR, exhibitions and conferences in real-time, and much more. The platform is universally accessible via PC as a video game, or in full immersion using VR devices. See more

The VRrOOm platform for ‘social XR’ festivals and events is dedicated to the dissemination of artistic performances, live shows, film screenings, conferences, exhibitions or visits to monuments in streaming and in 6DoF, allowing the audience to meet in virtual reality and move around in virtual universes as well as interact with 3D objects and people in real time.

VRrOOm is already a partner of prestigious festivals such as Venice, Cannes XR, Bruxelles, Sitges, etc. Their mission is to democratize access to culture through immersive technologies. Their new Social XR platform is already fully operational in private mode, with a public launch planned for Spring 2020.

We did the entire VR College workshop of the Biennale (3 – 6 March 2020) until yesterday entirely in VR in a lounge created by VRrOOm in VRChat. They improvised it in 3 days following the cancellation of the workshop in Venice. It went very well. We were 17 people involved. 4 whole days in 3 groups of people. It has been so positive that we are now going to upgrade the platform together for regular use. Louis and his team added: taking notes, sharing documents and visuals, viewing 360 content.

Virtway Events

The concerning situation with the coronavirus outbreak has caused event organizers to face the decision of cancelling or delaying international events in order to minimize the risk of contagion. Given the seriousness of the circumstances, the technological company Virtway and its partner Walcon Virtual offer event organizers with a possible solution: creating a virtual 3D version of their event. Companies considering cancelling could still use the virtual 3D platform, where event participants could access with their mobile devices within a secure digital environment. See more

Somnium Space

For meetings and conferences there are many options in Somnium Space. A large venue is the Somnium Space Amphitheater, which has already been the venue of preference for a whole series of live events. The venue can host a large crowd in an amphitheater style setting and has been equipped with a big screen for crystal clear presentations. Microphones can be used for a perfect audio experience.

For more tailored and even custom build venues, the Somnium Space user community can easily help out and work with you to create your very own virtual and branded office space. If this sounds intriguing, you can reach out to the community on Discord (link) and they will guide you. See more

Somnium Space is available for PC and can be used in VR and 2D mode (without headsets). It’s fully compatible with all PC VR headsets including the portable headset Oculus Quest with Link (Oculus Link lets you explore Oculus Rift content – including Somnium Space – when connected to a PC). It allows 300+ people in one location, large video screens, PDF presentations and the use of microphones for perfect sound.
