Review: AYAHUASCA – KOSMIK JOURNEY (Jan Kounen)

Seen at New Images 2019 – This VR experience is definitely something I’ve been wishing to feel for a long time. When I say feel instead of see, there is a reason.

Virtual reality is a way to transport people to real worlds, through 360 videos, but also to sensory and imaginary universes.

Ayahuasca – Kosmik Journey, by Jan Kounen

The script is really simple and isn’t the strength of this project at all: A Shaman invites you to take Ayahuasca (a famous and really strong drug in south America that is used for spiritual purposes) and when the Shaman starts the ceremony and accompanies you through his song, you start to hallucinate and live an either colourful or scary trip. Between snakes, skulls and monuments built out of the latter. But no words can describe this. Each person watching will feel different about surrounding graphics, reflecting something personal.

AYAHUASCA – KOSMIK JOURNEY (link) is designed like a tunnel. For example, snakes are coming up from your back, meandering by your sides and going in front of you. This is intensively hypnotic and true to the soul transcendance experience related to drugs, without the side effects (which are with Ayahuasca vomiting many times). Thanks Jan Kounen for that!

Unfortunately, as the installation makes people sit on the ground, you are not expected to look behind you much. But I was way too curious and it caused a few small bugs in the experience.

Also, aesthetically, the installation is cute with all those fake candles and little mappings but I regretted that the VR headset itself wasn’t pimped with a overmask related to the content.

As a conclusion I would say that this was really innovative in the form, I loved this experience and I wish to see more of those kinesthesis experiences in the future!
